Understanding How Access Control Works

In its simplest form, access control is a means of controlling who enters a location and when, and can make a good addition to any home security system.

Regardless of whether you own or rent your abode, home security should be a top priority. Naturally, thieves target properties with little to no security, or opt for homes that look unoccupied or easily accessible. With more than two million Australians still not having any form of basic security measures present, one of the more popular methods to safeguard against break-ins is to invest in a home security system.

However, not all home security systems were made equally, and nor should their installation be approached with a “one size fits all” solution. For homeowners who are eager to take relatively easy measures towards protecting their property, opting for a system that includes access control is surging in popularity – but what is it, and how does it work?

The Concept Of Access Control Explained

Access control is a method of security that can regulate who views or uses resources – thus, minimizing the potential risk of any form of unauthorized access, however that may present. As a general rule, there are two primary types of systems: logical and physical.

Logical access control systems limit connections to system files, data, and computer networks, and are a popular security tool for businesses or anyone wishing to protect certain intellectual properties. On the other hand, physical access control systems are designed to limit access to buildings, rooms, or any other physical destination.

While physical access control can technically include the use of bouncers, turnstiles often seen at train stations and even membership cards, domestic home security systems combine the technology of logical access control systems with the physical barriers used to restrict access in the real world.

Home security systems that feature access controls are commonly used to protect a home’s entry points without the need for a key, and can include the use of fobs, pin codes and even biometric identifiers such as fingerprints or facial recognition. In the event that you have a tradesperson or contractor visiting your home, many systems also allow for special access with time limits and other entry restrictions so that homeowners can have the best of both worlds when it comes to convenience and staying safe.

In terms of the downsides of access control, the most common security risk of intrusion through this type of system is by simply following a legitimate user through a door, and this is referred to as tailgating. How this happens is when a legitimate user will hold the door for the intruder, who is then granted access to the entire property. When deployed in residential settings, it’s a good idea to combine access control with a home security system that includes cameras, as the property owner is then able to verify exactly who is moving in and out of their abode.

It’s also worth noting that many property owners are often surprised to learn that installing a home security system can be a way to pay less for home insurance, particularly one that features access control. Although this stance does vary depending on the provider, adding things like alarms, cameras, and deadlocks will help to make your home more secure and therefore less likely to have theft related claims.

If installing a new home security system or giving your existing one an upgrade is on the cards, then it’s always a good idea to enlist the services of a licensed professional to get further security tips and to guarantee proper installation – but where do you find them?
