How To Clean A Ceiling Fan

By far one of the trickiest parts of your house to clean is the ceiling fan. Most of the time it just leaves our mind as something that we need to clean, or it is out of reach for us to clean it. But in actuality, cleaning a ceiling fan really is not that difficult, you just need to have the right equipment and frame of mind.

What You Need To Clean A Ceiling Fan

Before you start to clean your fan it is crucial that you have got the correct equipment. Some of the equipment that you will need to assist you in cleaning will include:

  • A secure step ladder
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Warm and soapy water
  • An old pillowcase
  • Mild all-purpose cleaner
  • Duster
  • An old sheet

How To Clean A Ceiling Fan

Once you have got all of the equipment for cleaning your fan, next you will need to decide your method of cleaning. There are actually a few different ways that you can clean a ceiling fan. The three methods that we think will be most useful for you are listed below.

The Pillowcase Method

To do this, make sure that you are able to safely and securely reach the fan. Once you have done this, gently place a pillowcase around one of the fan blades. Then, apply soft pressure and slowly remove the pillowcase from the blade to keep the dust and dirt inside the pillowcase and prevent it from spilling out into your room. Repeat this method for the rest of the blades on the fan. Once complete, you can shake the excess dust and dirt somewhere outside where it will not enter your house. The pillowcase can then be washed.

The Duster Method

This method works great for high-ceiling fans that might be dangerous for you to reach on your own. To get started, you will need to place an old sheet down on the area below the fan to ensure that excess dust is captured. Then, use your duster to clean the top of the fan blades. Once the tops are clean you can then clean the bottom of the blades. When doing this remember to brush away from yourself, and you might want to wear a mask to prevent breathing in dust.

The Cloth And Wipe Method

This method is only for fans that are caked in grease or other substances that have hardened onto the fan. Check the blades of the fan to see what you are dealing with. If it is not too bad, you should be able to get away with just using baby wipes and a cloth. If they are bad, you will need to use a cloth and some warm soapy water, or an all-purpose cleaner.

Knowing the proper method can help you clean your fan properly and safely. You may also be in keeping your air conditioning filter clean.
