Split System Vs Ducted Air Conditioning

If you’re weighing up whether to install a split system or ducted air conditioning, then it’s important to first understand their key points of difference.

Regardless of where you live in Australia, it’s no secret that our nation is susceptible to some wild weather and extreme temperatures. While the science shows that Australia has warmed by around 1.4°C (2.5°F) since 1910, it still doesn’t take away from the fact that large portions of the nation still shiver throughout the winter months.

In an effort to find the balance between the seasons, more Australians than ever are investing in air conditioning. In 1994, a quarter of Aussie households had it, but that number has since swelled to more than half. However, one question remains: what type of air conditioning is best suited to your abode, ducted air conditioning or a reverse cycle split system?

Comparing Split System And Ducted Air Conditioning

When comparing your options on the different types of air conditioners on offer, most residential shoppers opt for a reverse cycle split system. Not all split systems are reverse cycle air conditioners, as some split systems have only a cooling mode, while reverse cycle systems offer both heating and cooling functions.

Both of these types of units are made up of two parts, with one attached to the internal wall, while the other sits on the outside to exhaust heat out. Even if you’re not familiar with the fundamentals of a split system unit, there’s a high chance that you’ve seen one in action in an Australian residential property without realising it.

However, if you’re on a mission to heat or cool large areas of a property or office space, then purchasing multiple split system air conditioners often isn’t viable. Even the maximum 7-8kW unit can only cover a room up to 65m² at best, and multiple units are required if you want to extend coverage to bedrooms and offices in an abode. It’s at this point that homeowners often turn their attention towards ducted air conditioning options.

As its name might suggest, ducted air conditioning works by distributing heated or cooled air throughout a series of ducts installed in a home or office. Ducted air conditioning usually has an internal fan coil unit installed in the roof space of a property, and from this centralised location, a series of smaller ducts extend from it into as many separate spaces of the property as desired.

From these ducts, homeowners also have the option to heat or cool a room or space individually, which is referred to as zoning. In the room, there is generally a thermostat positioned on the wall, where one can select the desired temperature much like you would when using a traditional split system remote.

However, the extra power and control offered with ducted air conditioning does come at a price. As the installation process involves a much more labour intensive process, a standard four bedroom, single-storey home will cost around $11,000 to $14,000 to install a ducted air con system. In comparison, split system air conditioning installation costs can range anywhere from $600 to $5,400, depending on the type of air conditioning system or unit and how complex the install will be.

Regardless of whether you opt for a split system or ducted air conditioning, partnering with the right type of technician is crucial for a successful installation and ongoing maintenance.
