How To Improve Mobile Signal Strength At Home

For those who have the misfortune of living in a black spot, learning how to improve mobile signal strength at home can be nothing short of revolutionary.

For smartphone users, the era of playing snake on our Nokia 3315 often feels like a distant memory. Thanks to significant advancements in technology over the last two decades, many of us are often a little embarrassed to admit just how much we rely on phones to get through our day to day lives.

From social media, internet banking, navigation and even finding love, if you can think of it, there’s usually a way to do it via your mobile phone. Much like a car, data is the fuel that powers many of a mobile phone’s capabilities, and when WiFi isn’t available, the strength of our mobile phone signal – or lack thereof – can quickly become a source of both frustration and despair.

However, the good news is that with a little bit of research, learning how to improve mobile signal strength at home can be done – but where do you start, and what are your options?

Three Ways To Boost Your Mobile Phone Signal

Although there are over forty mobile phone providers in Australia, many people are generally surprised to learn that all phone plans run on one of three networks: Telstra, Optus or Vodafone.

Telstra’s market-leading mobile coverage of 99.4% is the very reason many Australians choose to pay a premium for the provider’s plans. While the “little guys” at Vodafone have long been the cheapest solution, it’s now rapidly catching up in recent years in regards to coverage, which now sits at 96%.

Despite these massive improvements in national phone coverage, signal blackspots can still happen almost anywhere. As they are primarily caused by poor network coverage or interference between your phone and the nearest cell tower, many Australians quickly write this frustrating conundrum off as just a part of life.

However, if you are one of the many Aussies constantly plagued with phone calls dropping out or a data speed that’s so slow you can barely scroll through Facebook, the good news is that there’s a handful of hacks out there to learn how to improve mobile signal strength at home.

Try A Signal Booster – The most common fix for a weak phone signal is to install a signal booster. It works just like a Wi-Fi booster, and takes a signal from somewhere you do have reception, and boosting that signal through the rest of your house. If you contact your carrier about bad signal strength, this is sadly often the first solution that’s suggested to customers instead of tackling the larger service issues.

Invest In A Femtocell – As a new age version of a signal booster, femtocells are devices that function by converting internet connection signals into mobile phone signals. The device by Optus creates a mini mobile network inside your home and allows you to make phone calls through the internet connection. Take note that they need a minimum internet speed of 1.5 Mbps and an upload speed of 256Kbps to work properly though.

Find Your Nearest Tower – Although often a last resort, people that constantly struggle with their phone reception might want to consider swapping to an alternate provider. To avoid moving out of the frying pan and into the fire, do your research and find your closest phone tower. Apps like Open Signal and RootMetrics will check the signal strength in a particular location, your proximity to the nearest tower, and the carriers that offer the best coverage in your area.

To solve the problem of dropped calls, poor voice quality and low data speeds caused by a weak mobile signal, many Australians opt for signal boosting hardware. As these devices are often installed on the roof and integrate with other electrical wiring present, it’s important to enlist the services of a licensed electrician to help with the installation process – but where do you find one?
