Five Common Air Conditioning Myths

It can be hard to separate fact from fiction when it comes to the best ways to use your air conditioning, so it’s important to debunk some of the common myths.

As most of us know, an air conditioner is a system that is used to cool down a space by removing heat from the area in question, and moving it elsewhere outdoors. In turn, the cool air can then be moved throughout a building through ventilation, and allows users to essentially control the temperature in the room where the air conditioner is positioned.

However, the best practices linked to using an air conditioner often falls under much debate. From how much power they use, how much they cost to run, what maintenance they need and what you can and can’t do with them, there’s a lot of misconceptions out there linked to using air conditioners. Considering that over 50% of Australian households now have one present in their abodes, it’s a good idea to do your research in order to make the most of them.

Debunking Air Conditioning Misconceptions

Considering the fact that the heating and cooling adds up to around 40% of the average Australian power bill, more and more people are turning their attention towards energy efficiency within this area. However, common myths linked to improving the function of an air conditioner can actually wind up making it more expensive to use, so we’ve taken the time to separate fact from fiction.

Myth: Bigger Is Better – Not quite. By choosing a unit that is more powerful than the space being conditioned needs, it will use more energy. To avoid selecting a unit that could consume more than expected, calculate the right-sized unit for the space you want to cool so you know that the air conditioner is going to perform as desired without costing a fortune.

Myth: Location Is Irrelevant – Contrary to belief, the location of the indoor unit is important. Avoid installing the unit where it will be exposed to direct sunlight, at the wrong height on the wall, or where the airflow could be potentially blocked or obstructed. Failure to do so can actually end up costing you hundreds of dollars every year.

Myth: Faster Cooling – While many people are guilty of rushing home in summer and cranking the air con at eighteen degrees to cool down the house faster, this isn’t actually effective. Although you’ll get a short burst of cold air, it puts enormous pressure on your unit, and it’s often unable to maintain such temperatures.

Myth: They Make You Sick – False. In fact, air conditioning can actually improve indoor air quality and reduce the chances of becoming ill. Air conditioners are fitted with filters that capture dust and pet dander, helping reduce the cause of allergies whilst also maintaining the humidity levels in a home to minimise the chance of mould developing.

Myth: They Use The Most Power – Roughly 38% of Aussies think that their air conditioner is the main contributor to their electricity bill. In reality, the rough running costs of an air conditioner is $0.13 – $0.36 per hour. Compared to an oven at $0.63 – $1.33 per hour or a clothes dryer at $0.50 – $3.14 per hour, the damage really isn’t so bad after all.

To keep your air conditioner in tip top shape, it’s worth keeping in mind that all machines need a little bit of help from time to time. As they operate on wired electricity, handling the unit and its relevant bits and pieces is not something that’s recommended for the unqualified – after all, if you get it wrong, the consequences can be both expensive and dangerous.

Whether you need the help of a licenced air conditioning electrician for residential, commercial or even industrial purposes, the good news is that Shield Electrical are on hand to ensure your air con unit performs at its best.
